For most of the year Sossusvlei consist of a series of flat white pans formed of dried mud and dotted with camelthorn Acacia trees (indicating the continuing presence of underground water).

This is located about half a mile from the main park gate. It is a narrow fissure in the sandstone, carved by the river Tsauchab, and up to 30 m deep in places. Flash floods may occur after heavy rain in the Naukluft Mountains. At other times, the floor contains pools of water, but on our visit the permanent water was confined to the deepest point down a deep dark hole 500 m upriver (with a few catfish).
